Description
Dr Diederick Basson is a prominent South African music educator, organist, and the Memory Manager for the Dutch Reformed Church Archives (NG Kerkargief). He is widely respected for his distinguished 30-year career in music education, radio broadcasting, and church music throughout the Western Cape.
Career & Background
- Appointed as the Memory Manager at the NG Kerkargief in early 2025, responsible for the preservation and historical records of the church.
- Served as Director of Music at Somerset College in Somerset West after previously teaching at Hoërskool Stellenberg.
- Part-time lecturer in Music Theory at the Stellenbosch University Music Department for ten years.
- Presented Hymnology modules at the Stellenbosch Theological Seminary.
- Freelance radio presenter on Fine Music Radio (FMR) since 2003.
- Organist for several Dutch Reformed congregations, including Welgemoed, Stellenbosch-Sentraal, Stellenbosch-Wes and Tafelberg.
Academic Qualifications
- PhD in Church Music – North-West University (2016)
- Master’s research in Amsterdam (1997) under an NZAV scholarship, specialising in French and German Baroque organ performance.
- Undergraduate studies in Church Organ Performance and Church Music at the University of Pretoria and Stellenbosch University.
